  • Premature babies with labored breathing, repiratory failure
  • tachypnea, hypoxia, labored breathing
  • CXR shows bilateral diffuse opacities with air bronchograms
  • no surfactant = collapse of airspaces
  • O2, mechanical ventilation, exogenous surfactant
